The Philistines placed the Ark in the temple beside their god, Dagon. But the next day, when the people went into the temple, they found that Dagon had fallen on his face.

They took Dagon and put him back up where he was supposed to be, but when they returned the next morning they found he'd fallen on his face once again. This time, though, they also found that his head and hands were broken off. The Philistines wondered what strange magic was at work. What they didn't realize was that things were going to get a lot worse.
