The Philistines placed the Ark in the temple beside their god, Dagon. But the next day, when the people went into the temple, they found that Dagon had fallen on his face.

They took Dagon and put him back up where he was supposed to be, but when they returned the next morning they found he'd fallen on his face once again. This time, though, they also found that his head and his hands were broken off. This frightened the Philistines and they wondered what strange magic was at work. What they didn't realize was that things were going to get much worse.
