Rebekah and Isaac had two sons. Their names were Esau and Jacob. They were twins, but Esau had been born first, so he stood to inherit his father's wealth. Esau was Isaac's favorite son, but Jacob was Rebekah's favorite. When Isaac was old and nearly blind, he called for Esau so that he could give him his rightful inheritance. But Rebekah and Jacob played an elaborate trick on Isaac and he ended up giving the inheritance to Jacob by mistake.

Esau hated Jacob for this and began plotting to kill him. When Rebekah found out, she told Jacob to flee to her brother’s place in the town of Haran. She told Isaac that Jacob had to go away for a while to find a wife because all of the local women were no good. Isaac, being familiar with the local women, heartily agreed, so he sent Jacob away with his blessing to find a suitable wife...
