On the way, Jacob found a good spot to camp for the night. Then he found a nice rock to rest his head against and lay down to sleep. Once Jacob had fallen asleep, God came and spoke to him in a dream.

In the dream, Jacob saw a stairway that went from where he was lying all the way up to the sky and a bit beyond, where Heaven is located. God was standing at the top of the stairs just outside Heaven. God said, “Jacob, I'm going to give you the land you're lying on. I'm going to give you so many descendents that they will be like dust. And like dust, they’ll be scattered all over the earth.” When Jacob woke up, he realized the place was actually a gateway to Heaven, albeit with an awful lot of steps to get to the top of the sky. He felt very special as he traveled on to meet Uncle Laban.
