With water being in short supply in the wilderness, there wasn't much anyone could do, and a great many people died that day. Some managed to escape with only second and third degree burns but, even for them, the pain was excruciating. Large areas of skin had severely blistered and some parts had turned a waxy white or had peeled off altogether. Some of the skin was numb due to nerve damage. And of course, back in those days there was no such thing as skin grafts and they didn't have proper ways of sanitizing the wounds, so many of those who survived the initial fire succumbed to infection and died slow painful deaths.
Shortly after this, though, some of the people had a real craving for meat. They reminisced about the fish they used to eat in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, leeks, and onions. Some of the people began to gripe about the lack of good food in the wilderness. But when God heard this he got blazing mad and started fuming about their impertinent meat craving. "Oh you want meat do you?" He thought to himself. "Alright then, if it's meat you want, it's meat you'll get." Oh He was mad...really, really mad...again.
