God had sent some of His angels to meet with Jacob. When Jacob saw them approaching, he exclaimed "This is God's camp", and he named the place Mahanaim. The angels asked Jacob how he was feeling, and he said he was really glad to be on his way home. He started to explain why he had stayed so long with his uncle, but one of the angels interrupted and said, “We know, Jacob. We’re angels.” So Jacob asked the angels how things were going in heaven. “Pretty good, thanks,” said one of them. “Yep, every day is just fun, fun, fun,” another one added.
Since the angels knew everything that was going on in Jacob's life, there really wasn't a lot to talk about so, after a few awkward sighs, Jacob said he had to be on his way. As Jacob waved goodbye to the angels, Rachel breathed a sigh of relief. She had been quite worried that the angels might tell her she couldn’t keep the gods she’d stolen from her father, but the angels didn't seem to care. Meanwhile, Jacob had sent messengers ahead of him to relay greetings to Esau. But when the messengers returned they told Jacob that Esau was already on his way to meet him and had 400 men with him. This news frightened Jacob because he thought his brother might be coming to seek revenge. He decided to set up camp for the night and rest. Later that night, Jacob was having trouble sleeping.
